“Twenties in the factory”

10/05/2016

In recent years, Vietnam has achieved great achievements in socio-economic development, gradually integrating deeply into the regional and global economy. However, in the current rapidly changing context, Vietnam is also facing many challenges, including ensuring the rights of workers, contributing to maintaining a sustainable economic development, national economic, social and environmental.

The unstable and unsustainable development of the economy together with the consequences of the process of industrialization – urbanization leads to an increase in social distance and multi-dimensional poverty rate, imbalance in migration, difficulties in accessing social security policies of migrant workers, etc. Millions of migrant workers, especially female workers, are currently facing the risk of unemployment or having to accept low incomes, long working hours, unsafe working conditions. Many people do not have access to public services and official support channels of the State and find it difficult to integrate into the community at their destination.

With the aim of reflecting truthfully some aspects of the life of migrant workers, CDI collaborated with a group of authors: Do Manh Cuong, Dinh Duc Hoang, Nguyen Thi Thu Lanh to create a photobook featuring stories of migrant workers in both formal and informal sectors with funding from Oxfam. It is our pleasure to introduce one of the stories we did in 2015, “Twenties in the factory”.
