On September 16, 2018, the Center for Development and Integration (CDI) in cooperation with the Hai Phong Economic Zone Union held a workshop to kick off project “Improving living and working conditions for female migrant workers in Viet Nam” at the People’s Committee of Tan Tien commune, An Duong district, Hai Phong province. Participants included the representatives of the Hai Phong Labor Confederation, Chairman of the Tan Tien People’s Committee, the Chairman of Hai Phong Economic Zone Union, CDI’s representatives, relevant local departments and agencies’ representative, landlords, workers who are living in Tan Tien commune.
At the workshop, participants discussed and raised the issues of migrant workers in Tan Tien commune. In which, many comments from workers and landlords focus on living and working conditions of workers, their difficulties in working while they have small kids, or difficulties in enrollment in public kindergartens and elementary schools… In addition, other issues are mentioned such as environmental issues (waste disposal), social security (drug crime, theft…)
Deep discussions with workers provided an insight into their lives at the motels with issues such as high price of electricity and water; Some rooms are cramped and hot which badly influences workers’ health and productivity; Social welfare for long-term workers has not been satisfactory… At the workshop, 4 groups of workers have been set up for implementation of upcoming activities with an emphasis on enhancement of legal knowledge and skills for workers.
Project officer of CDI presented overview of upcoming activities which will be carried out in Hai Phong, including an initial survey on living conditions of employees; establish and maintain regular activities of 6 groups of workers; 8 training courses for core workers; two quarterly meetings among workers groups; support initiatives by groups; exchange visit to Dong Nai and set up an information exchange mechanism (annual forum, connection to other groups of workers in Hai Duong, Bac Ninh).
The project “Improving living and working conditions for female migrant workers in Viet Nam” was launched in Hai Phong with the support of the Hai Phong Economic Zone Union aims at connectting workers, raising the voices and status of migrant workers in Hai Phong. The project was implemented within 6 months. After the launch, the project will implement group activities at the hostels, organize training courses, improve legal knowledge for the group leaders and core members before replicating activities to workers at the locality.
Project “Improving living and working conditions for female migrant workers in Viet Nam” will be implemented in Hai Phong and Dong Nai from 01/01/2018 to 31/03/2019. The beneficiaries of the project are migrant workers. Sponsor: Oxfam in Vietnam. Overall goals of the project are:
1) Laborers in the industrial zones in Hai Phong and Dong Nai are to improve their capacity to make contribution in the development of policies of the state and employers.
2) Contribute to the development of policies that improve working conditions and basic social services.
3) Support to build capacity and working conditions for Vietnamese social organizations, contributing to effective participation in relevant processes to help protect workers’ rights.
