From 24 to 27 September 2016, the solidarity mission and the workshop “Building Asian Electronic Workers” organized by SACOM Hong Kong (Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour) took place in Hong Kong – China. Representatives of Center for Integration and Development (CDI), together with representatives from other organizations working in the field of Labour rights from countries and territories such as Hong Kong – China, Taiwan, Vietnam, The Philippines as well as guest speakers who are university professors and activists in Hong Kong participated in the events.
The objective of the workshops are to share the current situation of production in electronics industry by the delegates to shed light on the realities and struggles behind electronic production; to identify the common problems in electronic production in China, Vietnam and Philippines; to develop a common strategy and a solidarity campaign for workers’ rights in electronic production and to build up an information sharing platform for future cooperation, campaign and organizing.
On the first two days, the group paid a visit to industrial zones. On the next two days, the workshops were filled with presentations from delegates and guest speakers. All participants had two discussion sessions, which at the end of the 2-day workshop, helped the group identify the common problems in electronics production in the region, and develop a common strategy and solidarity campaigns for workers in the region. The working group has now been connected to look for building up common actions in the coming time.
